Borrowing from Horace Greeley (who famously wrote "go west, young man!")
Houston is booming. San Antonio even more so. There is construction going on everywhere. In San Antonio, houses are being built. Lots of them. In talking to locals, it's partly due to oil. Beyond that, the business climate is simply good down here. Texas is open for business. There is no income tax, for one thing. The attitude is different. There are summer jobs for kids. And for high school and college graduates.
It is a breath of fresh air compared to Illinois.
Travel update:
I am getting wifi service right now, before everyone wakes up. The weather is good. Terry got the laundry done so there is no reason to stay here today. We are blowing this pop stand and heading west for Davis Mountain State Park for about 3 nights. Internet and cell access will likely be a problem unless we go into town for something.
We plan to attend a star viewing night at McDonald Observatory . Maybe a trip to a ghost town too. And this place is not too far, although I don't know if we'll make it over there.
After that, we should be heading down to Study Butte, TX, the western gateway to Big Bend National Park.
